Woman Killed in Collision with Big-Rig

An elderly woman was killed today at the intersection of Tascosa Road and Loop 335 according to the Department of Public Safety.  The accident occurred as the truck was exiting Loop 335 to Tascosa Road and ran through a stop sign.

Commercial Driver Compliance Improvement Act

The Commercial Driver Compliance Improvement Act would require commercial motor vehicles used in interstate commerce to install electronic devices within three years of passage of this legislation. If passed, it would require companies to install a device to the truck engine which would identify the driver operating the truck, record a drivers duty status and is capable of monitoring the location and movement of the vehicle.

The Legislation is needed as the federal government currently relies on drivers to fill out paper log books that show compliance with hours of service regulations. Electronic on board recorders would remove the guesswork in checking driver compliance. Many feel the new measure will improve the safety of the nation's highways by getting fatigued drivers off the road before they become a hazard. As people know, driving while fatigued can be very dangerous. Truck drivers face this danger more often than others because of the long hours and amount of miles they drive each day.

Truck Safety Programs Facing Budget Cuts

As we know the country is facing a budget crisis and congress is looking for ways to cut the federal budget and deficit. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance is warning that funding their programs at lower levels would weaken safety enforcement efforts. As a result large 18-wheeler truck wreck injuries and deaths could spiral upwards because of lack of enforcement. Approximately 75 % of all large truck fatalities are multi-vehicle crashes between cars and large trucks, and flexibility in the use of funds is critical to effectively targeting the problems.
