18-Wheeler Truck Rules Changed
The number of 18-wheelers and large commercial vehicles on U.S. roadways has been increasing for decades. But due to their size and extreme weight this also presents a unique danger, especially with accidents involving smaller vehicles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,380 people were killed in accidents nationwide involving large trucks during 2009. To help increase on-road safety, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety introduced a new Compliance Safety Accountability program in December. The program, which replaces the Safety Status Measurement System is aimed at any commercial motor carrier whose vehicles require a U.S. Dept of Transportation number. The goal is to reduce accidents by reaching unsafe carriers more quickly, holding them accountable for their drivers' performance. At the heart of the CSA program is a new Safety Measurement System which rates carriers based on seven violation categories.
