Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Final Rule Prohibits Texting For 18-Wheeler Truck Drivers
According to the FMCSA website the final rule addressing the issue of 18-wheeler truck drivers being able to text while operating in interstate commerce has been addressed and finalized on October 27, 2010. According to the rule it prohibits texting by commercial vehicle drivers while operating in interstate commerce and imposes sanctions, including civil penalties and disqualification from operating CMVs in Interstate commerce for drivers violating this rule. Recent research by the FMCSA shows a 18-wheeler truck driver is 23.2 times more likely to be involved in some type of accident while engaging in texting more than truck drivers who are not. The goal of the law is to increase safety on the nation's highways by reducing distractions of drivers.
One of the major causes of an 18-wheeler truck wreck is driver distraction. Distraction is anything that diverts the driver's attention from the primary tasks of navigating the vehicle and responding to critical events. In other words, a distraction is anything that takes your eyes off the road (visual distraction), your mind off the road (cognitive distraction), or your hands off the wheel (manual distraction). So when you think about tasks that can be driving distraction, you can see that they often fit into more than one category: eating is visual and manual, whereas using a navigation system is all three. There are two basic components of the distraction safety problem: the demands of the distracting task and the frequency with which drivers choose to multitask.
