During this day of the first 20 18-wheeler semi trucks inspected 6 had to be pulled off the road because they were such safety hazards. One of the trucks inspected only had two of the six brakes working correctly.
In the last two years of inspections some 2,000 vehicles were inspected with 400 or 1 out of 5 having safety issues and being taken off the road. The condition of the 18-wheeler's isn't the only problem officials continue to find, also drivers lying on their log books is a prevalent problem. One official said 10 to 15% of the drivers he comes in contact with are lying on their log books.
The fact that this is occurring is scary because the laws limiting the time an 18-wheeler semi-truck driver can be behind the wheel are their to protect the people. A driver who is tired could make a mistake which could lead to a devastating crash.
