Avandia Can Lead To Eye Disease New Study Finds

A recent study of Avandia has shown a risk of eye disease which can lead to blindness. People taking the drugs have a 3 to 6 time increased risk of developing diabetic macular edema, a condition which affects more than 100,000 people. The study will be presented Sunday at the American Diabetes Association's Annual meeting in San Diego.

Avandia Class Action Filed

Dozens of people are suing the makers of the diabetes drug Avandia alleging that it causes heart problems. The class action filed alleges that GSK the maker of the drug knew that consumption of Avandia increases the risk of heart problems, including heart attacks and congestive heart failure but didn't warn its patients. The lawsuit alleges that the company's own test in 2005 showed it to be true but didnt put a warning label on Avandia until 2007.

South Carolina Prosecutor Suing GlaxoSmithKline

Over Diabetes Drug Avandia

The drug maker who brought the diabetes drug Avandia to the U.S. market is being sued by South Carolina for marketing the drug to the residents of South Carolina and hiding the medications harmful side effects according to a lawsuit filed by the State's top prosecutor. The Prosecutor argued that the company was negligent when it claimed the drug didn't put patients' hearts at risk. Avandia's popularity has gone down hill since 2007 when the heart risks associated with taking the drug were published. The New England Journal of Medicine printed an article that evaluated dozed of studies which concluded the drug increases the risks of heart attacks and death.

Avandia Pulled From Shelves By November FDA

Says

The FDA has announced that in November the diabetes drug Avandia will no longer be sold in pharmacies due to the heart risks associated with it. The drug and its combination therapies will only be available in special plans where patients must enroll to take it.The rules of the plan state the drug will only be available to patients who have taken the medicine safely, or those who can't control their blood sugars with another drug and those who knows the risks of Avandia and still choose to take it.
