Wildfire Conditions Ripe for Panhandle
Both the Texas Forest Service and the National Weather Service have issued wildfire warnings for the Texas Panhandle. Beginning around noon today, the Texas Forest Service has issued a critical wildfire warning for Lubbock, Childress, Abilene, Midland, Odessa and Amarillo. The wildfire conditions are based on a combination of high winds, low humidity and high temperatures. This is an occurrence which Texans can expect to see frequently for the next couple of months. With high winds, wildfires can spread at a rate of 4 m.p.h, which is equivalent to a wildfire burning the length of a football field in one minute. In the past seven days alone the Texas Forest Service has responded to over 73 fires. Of Texas' 254 counties, 172 are currently reporting burn bans. The Texas Forest Service has coordinated with local fire departments and volunteer resources to be ready for rapid deployment in the case of a wildfire event.
